Von Albuminaten oder Eiweißstoffen: Zur Vermittlung von wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen an Frauen im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert
Abstract This paper analyses the promotion of findings in science (chemistry) among an audience of German-speaking women in the Kurzeme and Vidzeme regions at the end of the 19th century. The research data for the analysis consist of the article “Die Milch” published in four continued parts in the weekly edition “Rigasche Hausfrauenzeitung” at the beginning of 1884. Neither the author’s name nor surname are indicated (there is an indication –w– at the beginning of the article). It is possible that the author could have been the professor of chemistry at Riga Polytechnics Wilhelm Ostwald, who later was awarded the Nobel Prize (see Zigmunde 1999). In the article, there is a substantive review of the components of milk characterizing its chemical specifications and reactions, as well as a description of different dairy products, all outlined in the context of chemistry findings.
The analysis is carried out according to Jürg Niederhauser’s (1999) theoretical basis viewing the promotion techniques and strategies of scientific content. The results of the analysis show that, in order to share scientific content with the readers, the author has basically reduced the amount of information, and expanded compressed information (e. g., explanations of special lexis in different ways), as well as explaining special content in a different context more comprehensible for women. At the same time, the strategies found in...
