The Intercultural Imperative in Higher Education

In an increasingly polarized and interconnected world, the cultivation of intercultural competence (ICC) has become not only relevant but imperative. This article explores key global challenges influencing ICC, especially geopolitical polarization, dominance of the global north, global migration, digitalization and artificial intelligence, and climate justice. It goes on to highlight a number of emerging themes and trends across global practice, such as contextual relevance and assessment diversity as well as expanded definitions of ICC. “Real-world” issues such as migration, poverty, inequality, and climate change need to be aligned with ICC development. Based on these discussions, the article offers concrete actions for higher education institutions to advance intercultural learning, including an emphasis on transdisciplinary and lifelong learning, adoption of competency-based education, development of blended learning models, and recognition of local relevance within global frameworks. Higher education needs to understand ICC as a sustained process in all aspects of research and teaching as well as engagement. Emphasizing inclusivity, intentionality, and shared humanity, this work advocates for a holistic, context-sensitive, and process-oriented approach to intercultural development.
