Histories of Religious Pluralism

This new book series will show that a critical understanding of religious pluralism in the past is of vital significance to debates about identity, diversity, and co-existence in the present. Studies will focus on using a historical perspective to address one of three key themes in the period between 1500 and 2000 CE: intra-religious pluralism; inter-religious pluralism; or, religion, secularism, and the nation state. Within this frame of reference, constructive contrasts between a wide range of foci, approaches, and viewpoints will be keenly encouraged. The series will champion established lines of research in political, social, cultural, and gendered histories of religious pluralism – e.g. studies on liberty, persecution, and toleration – whilst also encouraging novel ways of transcending a scholarly discourse which is dominated by ideologies and methodologies derived from the social sciences – e.g. by studies on the theological and literary dimensions of conflict, cohesion, and community. The series will embrace scholarship on subjects from any part of the world. European and extra-European perspectives that complement traditional Anglo-American thinking are particularly welcome. As the ‘global turn’ continues to energize new types of enquiry, the series will also seek to advance studies of indigenous and displaced religious groups. With this scope there is a reflexive acknowledgement that the rationale for and defining concepts of the series are grounded in a ‘western’ intellectual tradition; however, this should serve as a challenge to prospective authors to pioneer new dialogues between ‘western’ and ‘non-western’ approaches and foci, or even surpass the dichotomy altogether. An emphasis will be given to promoting the best research of early career scholars from around the world, whilst also giving more established academics the opportunity to develop their multimedia policy-orientated work – e.g. podcasts, blogs, talks, press briefings, reports for thinktanks, governments, and public agencies etc. – into a book that would engage peers and students alike. Russian Transformations publishes studies across the entire extent of Russian literature, thought and culture from the medieval period to the present. The series gives special emphasis to the kinds of transformation that characterise Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet writing. Transformation has often been under the stimulus of (and resistance to) foreign traditions. Acts of cross-cultural and cross-literary reception mark Russia's sense of creative development and national identity. Transformation has often been the result of the on-going dialogues between writers working within the Russian literary tradition through polemic and subtle use of intertextuality. Similarly, the stunning political and social changes that have been characteristic of Russian history generated radical transformation in the institutions of literature and in forms of literature from Modernism to post-Perestroika as writers react to official policy on freedom of expression.

Hispanic Studies: Culture and Ideas

This series aims to publish studies in the arts, humanities and social sciences, the main focus of which is the Hispanic World. The series invites proposals with interdisciplinary approaches to Hispanic culture in fields such as the history of concepts and ideas, the sociology of culture, the evolution of the visual arts, the critique of literature and the uses of historiography. It is not confined to a particular historical period. Monographs as well as collected papers are welcome. Languages of publication are English and Spanish.

A retrospection of the most outstanding scholars adumbrates a panorama for reconsidering intellectual life in Poland. Until the publication of volume 21 the title of the series was "Polish Contemporary Philosophy and Philosophical Humanities". The series aspires to present a wide and relevant overview of best Polish works in philosophy and philosophical parts of the major fields of the humanities: political and social sciences, history, religious studies or what is named in Poland "the history of ideas". The subsequent editions of books within this series are either re-editions of the works previously published in non-Polish versions, or new translations from Polish. Some books contain extended works, other ones provide collections of smaller papers. Some of the authors presented in the series are widely acknowledged and regarded to be the "classics" of Polish intellectual life in the second half of the 20th Century, others are recognized as outstanding professors today. The quality and fame of the works and authors presented in the series are the only criteria for inclusion. The series is open to all streams of Polish philosophy: from analytical philosophy, through phenomenology and hermeneutics, to existential or religious philosophies. Also the word "philosophy" should be understood very widely in this case.

This series addresses a new need. The constitution of many contemporary communities is radically diverse, and the need is to think anew about them. Through a mixture of edited collections and single-authored volumes, the series aims both to examine how radical diversity has arisen in the religious and political constitution of society and to analyse the implications for the future so as to help ensure the harmonious relations between communities and the best practice of government. Studies in the History of Religious and Political Pluralism will evaluate new trends and theories and make available the findings of empirical research which demonstrates the nature of the pluralistic world in which we live.

Modernity in Question

The main idea behind this interdisciplinary series is to publish works of philosophers on topics related to contemporary debates on modernity and post-modernity. In philosophy as well as in human sciences, the concept of modernity has been widely discussed for decades, particularly after the collapse of communism. That crisis has been commonly described as the end, if not of modernity as such, at least of some modernity. Different terms like post-modernity or reflexive modernity indicate not only transformations in social, economic and political structures, but also in manners of thinking, of conceptualising reality. The series is open to collaborative works between East- and West-European scholars. Authors are welcome to submit manuscripts for monographs, anthologies and post-conference volumes.
