Academic and scholarly responses have built on the traditional and non-traditional analytical frameworks and promoted a multidimensional discourse on, for example, conflict management, peace and security systems, HIV/AIDS, democratic governance, and the implications of globalization. This series is designed to encourage innovative thinking on a broad range of development issues. Thus its remit extends to all fields of intellectual inquiry with the aim of highlighting the advantages of a synergistic interdisciplinary perspective on the challenges of and opportunities for development in the continent. Of particular interest are studies with a heavy empirical content which also have a bearing on policy debates and those that question theoretical orthodoxies while being grounded on concrete developmental concerns. Stadtentwicklung. Urban Development

Urban development is a key to designing the socio-spatial future of human societies. The book series pursues an interdisciplinary approach towards a wide array of public tasks: from urban design to the supply of local facilities and infrastructure, urban governance and the relationship between state and non-state actors. Urban development is also the arena in which visions about community life and its practical implementation meet. The series focuses on representing overarching topics. While the number of publications on special issues grows exponentially, they often seem to lack contextualization. It is the purpose of this series to close that gap. Besides a specifically German viewpoint, its publications bring international research results into play. The series was earlier published under: Beiträge zur kommunalen und regionalen Planung. Stadtentwicklung ist ein Schlüsselbereich für die Zukunftsgestaltung menschlicher Gesellschaften. Die Buchreihe möchte den Blick aus interdisziplinären Perspektiven auf ein breites Feld öffentlicher Aufgaben richten: vom Städtebau über technische und soziale Infrastrukturen bis zur politischen Steuerung eines Gemeinwesens durch Institutionen und Initiativen. Hier vereinen sich Visionen über das Zusammenleben mit praktischen Fragen seiner Ausgestaltung. Die Sammelbände und Monografien der Reihe sollen jährlich übergreifende Themen in den Mittelpunkt stellen und so zu Überblickswerken werden, die eine Vielzahl von Untersuchungen zu Einzelsachverhalten bündeln. Language Testing and Evaluation

Aims and Scope The aim of this series is to provide a forum for publishing theoretical and empirical research of a high standard in all areas of language testing and evaluation. Our focus is on research into language tests and assessment tools as well as on programme evaluation in which emphasis is placed on the characteristics of the instruments themselves. It is our intention to enhance the possibilities for international scholarly debate among experts as well as to make research findings and new developments known to practitioners and the interested public worldwide. We welcome contributions in English, German or French. Zielsetzung Die Serie dient als Publikationsforum für anspruchsvolle theoretische und empirische Forschung zum Testen und Evaluieren im Bereich des Lehrens und Lernens von Sprachen. Dabei geht es sowohl um Sprachtests und Assessment-Instrumente als auch um Fragen der Sprachprogrammevaluation, bei denen die Messinstrumente selbst im Vordergrund stehen. Die Absicht ist, einerseits zur Verbesserung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Diskussion beizutragen sowie andererseits Forschungsergebnisse und neue Entwicklungen sowohl den in der Praxis Tätigen als auch einem breiteren interessierten Publikum zugänglich zu machen. Sofia Conferences on Social and Economic Development in Europe

The series covers the proceedings of the Sofia Conferences on Sustainable Economic and Social Development (SCSESD). The conferences are organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEBA) of Sofia University in cooperation with the University of Cologne. They serve as a platform for encounters between Southeastern European scientists and colleagues from other regions, especially from Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and the USA. Thus the topics cover both, aspects of the social and economic situation in Southeast Europe as well as findings and ideas which might be useful for the further development of Europe, countries formerly under Communist rule, and the world. Studien zur Text- und Diskursforschung

Das Ziel dieser Reihe ist es, theoretische Probleme und empirische Beobachtungen der Text- und Diskurslinguistik vorzustellen und zu diskutieren. Es handelt sich um die Entstehung und Entwicklung der beiden Forschungsgebiete, ihre wichtigsten Schwerpunkte, aber auch um terminologische Kontroversen und strittige Fragen. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen darüber hinaus die Relation Text vs. Diskurs sowie Überlegungen zur weiteren Entwicklung der Forschung in beiden Bereichen. Sowohl Probleme des Textes und Diskurses als linguistische Phänomene, der Textsorten und verschiedener Diskurstypen, als auch Einzelfragen wie die Stellung der Intertextualität oder des Textes in der multimedialen Wirklichkeit bilden die Gegenstände für eine potentielle Erörterung. Geplant sind Arbeiten, die einzelsprachlich ausgerichtet sind. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf kontrastiven Studien (in erster Linie Deutsch-Polnisch, aber auch andere Sprachen), weil letztere sowohl für Germanisten als auch Slawisten von Belang sind. Nicht zuletzt sollen interdisziplinäre Ansätze, die in der aktuellen Wissenschaftsdebatte nicht nur zum Postulat, sondern auch oft zur Forschungsrealität werden, in der geplanten Reihe gezeigt werden, sodass Arbeiten mit einer großen Schnittmenge von Themen aus mehreren Fachgebieten zu begrüßen sind. Die Reihe wird sowohl Monographien (vor allem Dissertationen und Habilitationen) als auch Sammelbände aufnehmen, die sich in das skizzierte Themenspektrum einpassen.

Moving Texts/Testi mobili questions Italian memory and identity from the perspective of literary and media studies, providing a forum for discussions on major research topics, including migration and mobility studies, cultural studies, cultural memory studies, film studies, translation studies and studies on linguistic attitudes and sociolinguistic changes. Moving Texts/Testi mobili is open to research conducted within established and emerging fields of investigation. It specifically promotes multi-perspective, multi-disciplinary and inter-medial approaches. The series uses double-blind peer review and is supported by an international advisory board. Proposals in Italian, French or English are welcome both for the main series (monographs and edited volumes), and for Moving Texts/Testi Mobili – Tandem, the sub-series for conjoined essays by two different authors. Potential contributors are invited to submit a book proposal consisting of an outline, a sample chapter and a CV. Moving Texts/Testi mobili accueille des travaux consacrés aussi bien à des champs traditionnels qu'émergents. Elle soutient particulièrement les perspectives multiples, la pluridisciplinarité et les approches croisées entre différents médias. La collection pratique un peer-review en double aveugle et est soutenue par un conseil scientifique international. Les propositions en italien, français et anglais sont les bienvenues aussi bien pour la collection principale (monographies et volumes collectifs) que pour Moving Texts/Testi Mobili – Tandem, la nouvelle sous-collection accueillant des essais conjoints de deux auteurs. Cinema and Media Cultures in the Middle East

The purpose of this series is to demarcate and critically examine the shifting terrain of film- and media-making in the Middle East, and of practices of film and media studies regarding it, testing them both against their larger, social enabling conditions at the national, regional, and transnational levels. Titles in the series will engage recent developments in the field of Middle East film and media studies and will help point the field in an intellectually meaningful, pedagogically effective direction in relation to both current and, in some cases, significant, previously ignored older work. The series is conceived at a moment during which Middle Eastern film and film criticism have begun to develop in new directions. Recent years have witnessed a modest increase in scholarly engagement with topics and modes of inquiry often previously considered outside academic discourse. A handful of books and special journal issues published in English over the past half-decade, focusing on specific Middle Eastern countries, such as Tunisia, Morocco, Syria, Iran, Palestine/Israel and Turkey, as well as the long-overdue establishment of cinema studies as an emerging field of academic inquiry within universities located in the Arab world indicate a preponderance of previously unproblematized issues now circulating within the field. These include critical questions from queer and transgendered perspectives about the representation of women, and from indigenous and settler-colonial studies perspectives about the representation of migrant workers and refugees, the growing importance of documentary, digital animation and hybrid shooting, the continuing influence of global cinema imperatives, and the revival of interest in militant, revolutionary and third cinema aesthetics.

Issues in healthcare ethics affect almost every person all over the world. The immense leaps in science and technology, changes in the general perception of national and global interests, possible limits in resources, mass communication, and other possible limits in resources, mass communication, and other factors have currently engendered a stronger interest and concern with health. This may range from the commonly discussed issues of euthanasia, abortion, macro- and microallocation of resources, and mandatory AIDS testing to the less frequently addressed but still vital issues in pharmacology, genetic testing, screening and therapy, nursing, mental health, and public health. Books, articles, and scholarly studies appear frequently in many countries. In each, the literature tends to consider the ethics of healthcare issues in depth but from a standpoint defined by culture and nationality, and by national government policies and perspectives. Such a standpoint necessarily limits and excludes many potentially useful and innovative approaches to issues. The International Healthcare Ethics series presents a broad perspective on a wide range of healthcare issues and the exchange of ideas between cultures and nations to stimulate thought. It also offers a forum for addressing healthcare issues that can affect each of us on a global scale. Manuscripts are welcome from universities, bioethics centers, and healthcare organizations. Critical Praxis and Curriculum Guides

The Critical Praxis and Curriculum Guides is a curriculum-based series reflective of theory creating praxis. The series targets not only undergraduate and graduate audiences, but also tenured and “experienced” teachers of all disciplines. Research suggests that teachers need to have well-designed, thematic-centered curricula and lessons at their disposal. This is accomplished when the school works as a community to meet their own needs. Community in this sense includes working collaboratively with students, parents, and local community organizations to help build the curriculum. Practically, this means that time is devoted to professional development workshops, not exam reviews or test preparation pointers, but real learning. Together with administrators, teachers form professional learning communities (PLCs) to discuss, analyze, and revise curricula and share pedagogical strategies that meet the needs of their particular school demographics. This communal approach was found to be more successful than requiring each individual teacher to create lessons on her/his own. Ideally, we would love it if each teacher could create their own authentic lessons because only s/he truly knows her/his students – and we encourage it, because it is possible! However, as educators ourselves, we understand the realities our colleagues in public schools face, especially when teaching in high needs areas. When possible, and in the spirit of communal practices, the series welcomes co-authored books by theorists and practitioners or solo-authored books by an expert deeply informed by the field.
