Current Issues in the Slovak Mass Media

The book deals with the problems of media communication and its formation in the Slovak Republic in and after 1993. It focuses on the social function of the media in the sense of journalistic communication. The authors also address the problems of gender stereotypes presented through social networks and advertising in all kinds of media in Slovakia and abroad. This book also explores the question of forming a theoretical basis for the creation of mass media communication (print media, film, photography, literature, works in marketing communication, books). This book does not elaborate on all problems of the mass media in the Slovak Republic, but it attempts to examine the key issues.

3 Issues of Analytical Journalism in the Magazine Romboid


In the context of Slovak journalism, especially the analytical one, it is important to perceive and systematize the latest knowledge. In this case, these refer especially to the research of historical connections of the existence of analytical journalism and literary criticism in Slovak magazine publishing. The chapter analyzes and describes the period of functioning of literary criticism of the last decade of the 20th century in the Romboid magazine. An emphasis is put on the analysis of particular discourses of literary criticism and meta-critical reflections. It reflects on the collection of articles on journalism and literary criticism that were published e.g. by Jozef Bob,67 Milan Hamada68 or Igor Hochel69. Individual sub-chapters are focused on solving the issues of historical existence and forming of literary critical reflexion of meta criticism in selected phases of their development. It provides a complex, analytical-synthetic overview of texts that refer to literary criticism. It forms and reflects one the current message of analytical publicist journalistic discourses.

3.1 Forming of Journalism in the Romboid Magazine from 1966 to 1989

“The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things. The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography.”70
