European Connections

European Connections: Studies in Comparative Literature, Intermediality and Aesthetics is a peer-reviewed series that publishes innovative research monographs, edited volumes as well as translations of key theoretical works. The series focuses on the literary and artistic relations that have shaped and continue to shape European cultures across national, linguistic and media boundaries, leading to vibrant new forms of artistic creation and aesthetic expression. It also wishes to explore relations with non-European cultures with a view to fostering more equitable models of cultural exchange and transfer. The series promotes comparative, intermedial and interdisciplinary approaches, whether studies of specific writers, filmmakers and artists; critical re-evaluations of historical periods (from the medieval to the ultra-contemporary) and movements; or wider theoretical reflections within the fields of comparative literature, intermediality studies and aesthetics. In light of the urgent need to revitalize the idea of Europe along new lines of thought, the series encourages research that explores the rich connections within European artistic and cultural production as well as the participation of European cultures in what the great philosopher of relation Édouard Glissant has called the Tout-monde. Religions and Discourse

«Religions and Discourse» explores religious language in the major world faiths from various viewpoints, including semiotics, pragmatics and cognitive linguistics, and reflects on how it is situated within wider intellectual and cultural contexts. In particular a key issue is the role of figurative speech. Many fascinating metaphors originate in religion e.g. revelation as a ‘garment’, apostasy as ‘adultery’, loving kindness as the ‘circumcision of the heart’. Every religion rests its specific orientations upon symbols such as these, to name but a few. The series strives after the interdisciplinary approach that brings together such diverse disciplines as religious studies, theology, sociology, philosophy, linguistics and literature, guided by an international editorial board of scholars representative of the aforementioned disciplines. Though scholarly in its scope, the series also seeks to facilitate discussions pertaining to central religious issues in contemporary contexts. The series will publish monographs and collected essays of a high scholarly standard.

Modern French Identities

This series aims to publish monographs, editions or collections of papers based on recent research into modern French literature. It welcomes contributions from academics, researchers and writers worldwide and in British and Irish universities in particular. Modern French Identities focuses on the French and Francophone writing of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, whose formal experiments and revisions of genre have combined to create an entirely new set of literary forms, from the thematic autobiographies of Michel Leiris and Bernard Noël to the magic realism of French Caribbean writers. The idea that identities are constructed rather than found, and that the self is an area to explore rather than a given pretext, runs through much of modern French literature, from Proust, Gide, Apollinaire and Césaire to Barthes, Duras, Kristeva, Glissant, Germain and Roubaud. This series explores the turmoil in ideas and values expressed in the works of theorists like Lacan, Irigaray, Foucault, Fanon, Deleuze and Bourdieu and traces the impact of current theoretical approaches – such as gender and sexuality studies, de/coloniality, intersectionality, and ecocriticism – on the literary and cultural interpretation of the self. The series publishes studies of individual authors and artists, comparative studies, and interdisciplinary projects and welcomes research on autobiography, cinema, fiction, poetry and performance art and/or the intersections between them. Contemporary Studies in Descriptive Linguistics

This series provides an outlet for academic monographs which offer a recent and original contribution to linguistics and which are within the descriptive tradition. While the monographs demonstrate their debt to contemporary linguistic thought, the series does not impose limitations in terms of methodology or genre, and does not support a particular linguistic school. Rather the series welcomes new and innovative research that contributes to furthering the understanding of the description of language. The topics of the monographs are scholarly and represent the cutting edge for their particular fields, but are also accessible to researchers outside the specific disciplines. Contemporary Studies in Descriptive Linguistics is based at the School of English, University of St Andrews. The Literary and Cultural Stylistics subseries aims to explore the intersection of descriptive linguistics with the disciplines of literature and culture. The techniques of stylistic analysis offer a way of approaching texts both literary and non-literary as well as all forms of cultural communication. The subseries offers a home for this research, where literary criticism meets linguistics and where cultural studies meets communication. It welcomes a wide range of data sets and methodologies, with the intention that every book in the subseries makes a new contribution to the disciplines that support them.

Cultural Identity Studies

This series publishes new research into relationships and interactions between culture and identity, broadly conceived. Studies relating to intercultural or transcultural identities are particularly welcome, as the series is the publishing project of the Intercultural Studies research group at Dalarna University, Sweden. The series embraces research into the roles of linguistic, social, political, psychological, literary, audiovisual, religious and/or cultural aspects in the processes of individual and collective identity formation. Given the nature of the field, interdisciplinary and theoretically diverse approaches are encouraged. Work on the theorizing of cultural aspects of identity formation and case studies of individual writers, thinkers and/or cultural products will be included. The series welcomes intercultural, transcultural and transnational links and comparisons worldwide.

European Semiotics originated from an initiative launched by a group of researchers in Semiotics from Denmark, Germany, Spain, France and Italy and was inspired by innovative impulses given by René Thom and his «semiophysics». The goal of the series is to provide a broad European forum for those interested in semiotic research focusing on semiotic dynamics and combining cultural, linguistic and cognitive perspectives. This approach, which has its origins in Phenomenology, Gestalt Theory, Philosophy of Culture and Structuralism, views semiosis primarily as a cognitive process, which underlies and structures human culture. Semiotics is therefore considered to be the discipline suited par excellence to bridge the gap between the realms of the Cognitive Sciences and the Sciences of Culture. The series publishes monographs, collected papers and conference proceedings of a high scholarly standard. Languages of publication are mainly English and French. Sémiotiques européennes est le résultat d'une initiative prise par un groupe de chercheurs en sémiotique, originaires du Danemark, d'Allemagne, d'Espagne, de France et d'Italie, inspirée par l'impulsion innovatrice apportée par René Thom et sa «sémiophysique». Le but de cette collection est de fournir une large tribune européenne à tous ceux qui s'intéressent à la recherche sémiotique portant sur les dynamiques sémiotiques, et réunissant des perspectives culturelles, linguistiques et cognitives. Learning a foreign language facilitates the most intimate access one can get to the culture and society of another language community. The process of learning a foreign language always involves intercultural levels of engagement between the languages and cultures concerned. This process is also a long and arduous one which involves an enormous variety of factors. These factors are located on individual, socio-cultural and linguistic planes. They engage in a complex interplay between any elements of these more general planes and the concrete learning process of the learner. The series Intercultural Studies and Foreign Language Learning provides a forum for publishing research in this area. It publishes monographs, edited collections and volumes of primary material on any aspect of intercultural research. The series is not limited to the field of applied linguistics but also includes relevant research from linguistic anthropology, language learning pedagogy, translation studies and language philosophy.

Studies in Historical Linguistics

Studies in Historical Linguistics brings together work which utilises the comparative method of language study. Topics include the examination of language change over time, the genetic classification of language, lexicography, dialectology and etymology. Pronunciation, lexis, morphology and syntax are examined within the framework of historical linguistics. Both synchronic and diachronic approaches are used so that language is examined both at one time and across time. Historical Linguistics is still a young area of academic study, but it has its foundations in one of the oldest - philology. This series recognises both the seminal importance of philology, and the recent development through the conceptual framework provided by linguistic science. Studies in Historical Linguistics is based at the Department of Media, Culture and Languages at the University of Roehampton.

The main purpose of the «Rethinking Cinema» series is to provide film scholars as well as professionals from the audiovisual field with innovative research material in the field of film aesthetics, theory and history. Many areas of last century’s main attraction are still there to be rediscovered or have seldom been approached in the past. Consequently, priority is given to film concepts, genres, works or authors which have not been frequently dealt with. Conference proceedings, collections of essays, revised doctoral theses or monographs are published and have to distinguish themselves by a considerable degree of originality, audacity and scientific rigour, without neglecting the transdisciplinary and cross-cultural aspects related to different branches from the Humanities such as Art History, Philosophy or Linguistics. The series welcomes manuscripts written in French and/or in English as well as translations of noteworthy texts from other foreign languages. La collection « Repenser le cinéma » privilégie les approches novatrices, les analyses de concepts, de genres, de courants, d’auteurs et de films rarement étudiés, qu’il s’agisse d’actes de colloque, d’essais, de versions remaniées de thèses de doctorat ou encore de monographies. Elle se propose d’offrir aux chercheurs, aux enseignants de l’audiovisuel ainsi qu’aux professionnels du cinéma des pistes de réflexion inédites sur la théorie, l’histoire et l’esthétique d’un art qui recèle de multiples chantiers peu balisés au cours du siècle qui l’a vu naître. La démarche méthodologique adoptée au sein des travaux publiés doit faire preuve d’originalité, d’audace et de rigueur scientifique, tout en visant les corrélations transdisciplinaires et transculturelles avec d’autres domaines des sciences humaines (histoire de l’art, philosophie, linguistique, etc.). La collection « Pensée et perspectives africaines » a pour but de révéler, de manière critique, les différents aspects de la pensée africaine. Elle s’efforce, d’une part, de mieux faire comprendre celle-ci et, d’autre part, de dégager les voies à travers lesquelles l’Afrique peut se construire et contribuer à la construction du monde. La collection se préoccupe de stimuler et de faire connaître l’expérience noétique africaine dans ce qu’elle a de spécifique et d’universel. Elle promeut la recherche et la réflexion au sens le plus large. En créant les conditions d’une connaissance à la fois intime et critique des langues, cultures et arts d’Afrique, elle favorise la production d'oeuvres nouvelles. Elle accueille donc toute étude de littérature, anthropologie, histoire, philosophie, art, linguistique, etc., quelle que soit sa provenance, qui contribue à faire connaître la pensée africaine ou d’inspiration africaine. The series «African Thought and Perspectives» aims at a critical analysis of the various aspects of African thought. On the one hand, it focuses on a better understanding of African thought and, on the other, it endeavours to find out ways through which Africa can develop itself while contributing to the development of the world as a whole. The series presents the African intellectual experience in its specificity as well as in its universality. It will also promote research and reflection on African matters in the widest sense. By creating the conditions in which African languages, cultures and arts can be intimately and critically examined, it encourages the production of new works. It, therefore, particularly welcomes studies on literature, anthropology, history, philosophy, art or linguistics that contribute to a better knowledge of African – or African-inspired –thought.

Moving Texts/Testi mobili questions Italian memory and identity from the perspective of literary and media studies, providing a forum for discussions on major research topics, including migration and mobility studies, cultural studies, cultural memory studies, film studies, translation studies and studies on linguistic attitudes and sociolinguistic changes. Moving Texts/Testi mobili is open to research conducted within established and emerging fields of investigation. It specifically promotes multi-perspective, multi-disciplinary and inter-medial approaches. The series uses double-blind peer review and is supported by an international advisory board. Proposals in Italian, French or English are welcome both for the main series (monographs and edited volumes), and for Moving Texts/Testi Mobili – Tandem, the sub-series for conjoined essays by two different authors. Potential contributors are invited to submit a book proposal consisting of an outline, a sample chapter and a CV. The series «　Destini incrociati / Criss-crossed fates　» was born out of the encounter of italianist teachers and researchers working in the various francophone universities in Belgium. Multilingual, it offers both studies of a general nature and more specific contributions within the areas of Italian language, culture and literature. With no predetermined methodology, and open to the plurality of voices and skills, the series «　Destini incrociati / Criss-crossed fates　» sets out to combine academic rigour with the pleasure of reading, in publishing alternatively works with multiple authors, monographs, critical and linguistic essays, and academic books. The series has thus been conceived of as a cultural library, an ideal point of convergence for a variety of themes, projects, perspectives and new approaches. All volumes in this series passed a selection process that included double blind peer-review. Nata dallincontro di docenti e ricercatori di italianistica attivi nelle università francofone del Belgio, la collana «　Destini incrociati / Destins croisés　» raccoglie, in più lingue, studi d’insieme e interventi specifici su argomenti che pertengono alla lingua, alla cultura e alla letteratura italiana. Senza preclusioni metodologiche, aperta a voci e competenze diverse, «　Destini incrociati / Destins croisés　» si propone di coniugare rigore scientifico e piacere della lettura, alternando la pubblicazione di volumi miscellanei a monografie, di saggi critici e linguistici a edizioni di testi. La collana si presenta dunque come una biblioteca di cultura, in cui varietà di temi e progetti, novità di prospettive e approcci trovino un punto ideale di convergenza. Ogni volume della collana è stato sottoposto a una doppia revisione paritaria anonima.

This series publishes contributions which explore new territory in the ever-evolving field of comparative literature. Its monographs, written in English or in French, typically deal with the interaction between various authors, literary genres and societies or cultures, if necessary drawing on literary theory. The term «comparative» is not restricted to the study of different national literatures. It also refers to comparative studies within a single linguistic culture, e.g. in a multicultural society or a postcolonial country. The series seeks to re-assess the complex relationship between margin and center, emphasizing, whenever possible, a non-Eurocentric perspective. Cette collection publie des travaux ouvrant de nouveaux horizons dans le domaine sans cesse en évolution de la littérature comparée. Ses monographies, rédigées en anglais ou en français, traitent de préférence de l’interaction entre différents auteurs, genres littéraires et sociétés ou cultures, en faisant appel, le cas échéant, à la théorie de la littérature. Le terme « comparatiste » n’est pas limité à l’étude de différentes littératures nationales. Il s’applique également aux études comparatistes effectuées dans les limites d’une seule culture linguistique, par exemple dans une société multiculturelle ou postcoloniale. La collection tente donc de redéfinir la relation complexe entre centre et périphérie, en adoptant, dans la mesure du possible, une perspective non-eurocentrique.

The series, seeking to present the richness that this expansion of points of view constitutes, will welcome studies making it possible to confront the data and the observations of research centered on the linguistic system with those of studies exploring other areas of research on the operation of language in specific contexts: the area of acquisition, the area of teaching/learning, the area of different types of variation, diachronic, diatopic, diastratic, oral/written, etc. All the volumes published in the series «GRAMM-R» will be subject to double blind peer review. La collection « GRAMM-R. Études de Linguistique française » a pour but de rendre accessibles les travaux de linguistique française, en tenant compte, à la fois, des grandes théories linguistiques, de la multiplication des recherches dans des domaines connexes et de la diversification des points de vue sur le langage. This series publishes peer-reviewed monographs and edited volumes by internationally renowned scholars in the field of the social use of information and communication technologies (mass media included), communication studies and science and technology social studies. The series Language Competence and Language Awareness in Europe unites interdisciplinary linguistic research with a thematic focus on multilingualism, linguistic choices and linguistic variability, language contact processes in Europe – and beyond its boundaries – as well as situated speech practices and literacy skills in private and public spaces. The series editor Amei Koll-Stobbe welcomes manuscript proposals, especially data orientated analyses of language competence cum performance with a priority on basic research (without any restrictions regarding theoretical and methodological frameworks). Prior to publication, the quality of the works published in this series is reviewed by external referees appointed by the editor. In der Buchreihe Sprachkönnen und Sprachbewusstsein in Europa erscheinen vorwiegend Sammelbände aus Linguistik und Anglistik. Der thematische Fokus liegt auf der Sprachkontaktlinguistik, auf Aspekten von Sprachwahl und Sprachvariabilität in nationalen Sprachgrenzen – oder über diese hinweg – sowie auf situierten Sprachpraktiken (und literacy skills) in privaten und öffentlichen Räumen. DASK presents a forum for linguistic research on the interrelationship between language and culture. The series is interdisciplinary in nature and consists of monographs and collections of papers. The main purpose of the editors is to initiate a dialogue between linguistic science and neighbouring disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, semiotics, literary studies and intercultural communication. The aim of establishing a series at the intersection of linguistic and cultural studies is to provide academics and interested students with a scientific framework for studying the interaction of language and culture. Until the publication of volume 42 the series was edited by prof. Jacek Fisiak (1936-2019). The Crossroads and Interfaces: Studies in Linguistics and Literature series presents monographs and collected volumes on Linguistics, Literature and Culture in the fields of English Language and Literatures as well as Linguistics. Topics include (among others) problems and methods of SLA (Second Language Acquisition), English-Polish contrastive linguistics, intertextuality, and studies on 19th-century literature and authors. The series was formerly known as Polish Studies in English Language and Literature.
