Russian Transformations: Literature, Culture and Ideas

Russian Transformations publishes studies across the entire extent of Russian literature, thought and culture from the medieval period to the present. The series gives special emphasis to the kinds of transformation that characterise Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet writing. Transformation has often been under the stimulus of (and resistance to) foreign traditions. Acts of cross-cultural and cross-literary reception mark Russia's sense of creative development and national identity. Transformation has often been the result of the on-going dialogues between writers working within the Russian literary tradition through polemic and subtle use of intertextuality. Similarly, the stunning political and social changes that have been characteristic of Russian history generated radical transformation in the institutions of literature and in forms of literature from Modernism to post-Perestroika as writers react to official policy on freedom of expression.

The series brings together contemporary research within the fields of philosophy of language and linguistics. The range of topics includes philosophical and formal investigations into the nature of language, the influence of philosophy (especially, but not exclusively, analytic) upon linguistics and the philosophical background of semantic and pragmatic theories. Other topics of interest include the influence of modern linguistic research upon philosophy, issues in linguistic methodology, linguistic and philosophical aspects of argumentation, and the interrelations between philosophy of language, philosophy of literature, and philosophy of mind. Until the publication of volume 21 the title of the series was "Polish Contemporary Philosophy and Philosophical Humanities". The series aspires to present a wide and relevant overview of best Polish works in philosophy and philosophical parts of the major fields of the humanities: political and social sciences, history, religious studies or what is named in Poland "the history of ideas". The subsequent editions of books within this series are either re-editions of the works previously published in non-Polish versions, or new translations from Polish. Some books contain extended works, other ones provide collections of smaller papers. Some of the authors presented in the series are widely acknowledged and regarded to be the "classics" of Polish intellectual life in the second half of the 20th Century, others are recognized as outstanding professors today. The quality and fame of the works and authors presented in the series are the only criteria for inclusion. The series is open to all streams of Polish philosophy: from analytical philosophy, through phenomenology and hermeneutics, to existential or religious philosophies. Also the word "philosophy" should be understood very widely in this case.

Lawrence Krader’s Legacy in Science, History and Philosophy

Lawrence Krader (1920-1998) was an American philosopher and anthropologist best known for his empirical work among the various indigenous peoples of Central Asia; his transcription, editing and publication of Karl Marx’s ethnological notebooks; his work on the formation of the state; and his theory of labor and value, in which he critically traced the history of objective value theory from Aristotle to Marx and the Marxists, and attempted to bring it into line with the subjective value theory from Böhm-Bawerk, to von Mises and von Hayek. Just prior to his death Krader expressed his desire to establish a research project in conjunction with Cyril Levitt at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The Lawrence Krader Research Project was officially established in April 2008 to edit, introduce and publish Krader's many unpublished works. The first years of the series will focus on these unpublished manuscripts. Subsequnetly the series will include works by others who have taken up Krader’s ideas critically in their own work. The editors particularly welcome manuscripts that develop a serious critical appraisal of Krader’s works. At the same time, they also welcome the work of those newly minted or seasoned scholars who take up some of the questions raised by Krader in his various works.

Die Begriffe „Transformationen", „Differenzierungen" und „Perspektiven" bezeichnen zentrale Aufgaben und Leistungen von Geschichtswissenschaft im 21. Jahrhundert. Stets ist sie gefordert, etablierte Narrative zu hinterfragen. Das kann zur Transformation von Geschichtsbildern und Meistererzählungen führen. Häufiger aber geht es darum, durch neue Erkenntnisse zu differenzierteren Darstellungen zu gelangen oder bekannte Sachverhalte aus einer anderen Perspektive zu beleuchten. Zugleich wird sich die historische Forschung jedoch immer ihrer eigenen perspektivischen Gebundenheit bewusst sein. In der Reihe werden Monographien und Sammelbände publiziert, die am Historischen Seminar der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität entstanden sind. Sie steht aber auch anderen Autorinnen und Autoren offen.

Gesellschaften und Staaten im Epochenwandel / Societies and States in Transformation

The series “Societies and States in Transformation” offers an interdisciplinary forum for investigations of radical changes in world history with their concomitant social, political, cultural, and economic upheavals. Focus is thus laid on people and societies, both as actors and agencies in processes of transformation and as objects of such changes. These issues are addressed not only in the context of the intense ideological, institutional, and sociological shifts of the 20th Century, but also from deeper historical perspectives, and with a concern for processes currently emerging on the global horizon. The series thus deals with the various forms of expression in time and space that reflect the reactions to the challenges posed by epochal change brought about by the affected societies and nations. It includes works from historical and political science, sociology, socio-cultural anthropology, and cultural studies with the aim of facilitating interdisciplinary communication and interaction. Volume 25 concludes the serie. Studies in Philosophy, Culture and Contemporary Society

The aim of the series is to present classical philosophical thought and knowledge about problems and processes which take place in contemporary society. Such a perspective stems from the very relationship between philosophy and social sciences, which is both dynamic and reflexive. On the one hand, in its pure form as a ‘theoria,’ philosophical thought – even if sometimes abstracts from the social context – always remains an active observation that, in the long run, has an impact on social processes, and especially on social sciences. On the other hand, there is a reverse process in which social phenomena directly stimulate philosophical thought. As part of the series, we plan to publish monographs and volumes dealing with specific problems or social phenomena. Furthermore, the works of Polish societies, like The Polish Leibnizian Society and The Bachelard Society ‘Mythopaeia’, and others will be published.
